Comcast has joined cable providers Cox, Time Warner, Charter and Wave Broadband in applying for a statewide franchise with the California Public Utilities Commission under the Digital Infrastructure and Video Competition Act that took effect in early 2007.

An imminent ruling by the Federal Communications Commission may toss municipal cable franchise agreements out the window. According to sources in Washington, D.C., the FCC is expected to rule next week on the ability of local governments to negotiate franchise contracts with cable and telecom operators.

Both can only be seen on San Francisco Cable Access Stations 29 and 76, so we may find out. Zane Blaney, Executive Director of the San Francisco Community Television Corporation (CTC), says California’s new cable laws might force San Francisco’s local cable access stations off the air.
