Cable Competition, Could Tuesday Be Time To Vote?

Submitted by Joe Legge on May 14, 2007

I promised to keep you updated on the "Cable Competition" bill proposed in the Tennessee Legislature. I haven't forgotten. There just really isn't much new to report. Lawmakers continue to hold hearings on the matter, hearing from AT&T, Comcast, Charter, and a host of other entities involved.

There has been no vote yet in Commerce committee, but there could be Tuesday. The legislative session continue to near its end and with lots of surplus revenue to decide how to spend, in addition to passing the budget, these ancillary issues will fall by the wayside.

About 30 amendments have been filed to this bill too. One comes from Rep. Gerald McCormick. He wants cities to be able to offer a reduced franchise fee in exchange for an agreement of service in areas without pay tv service.

If you want to watch the action... about 10:30am Tuesday click here for a feed from the House Commerce committee, then click here about 1:30pm for a feed from the Senate Commerce committe.
