NATOA Call to Action on Stevens Senate bill HR. 5252

Posted on September 13, 2006 - 9:42pm.

From NATOA

While the rumor mill is rampant that there’s just not enough time for the Senate to act on telecom reform this session (and we agree, that there is insufficient time to give telecom reform the type of consideration it needs), we never the less need to be vigilant. Senator Stevens is still working hard to lock in the necessary 60 votes to close debate (cloture) and the 60 votes necessary to overcome objections due to an unfunded mandate point of order. These are the only things holding him back – and we are working hard to keep him from obtaining those critical votes.

In addition, there is more and more talk about using other legislative vehicles (not directly related to telecom) for the purpose of attaching the telecom language – just to get it to conference. We can’t let that happen either! The issue of telecom reform is too important to allow this Senate to ram it through this session (now or in the lame duck session). Contact your Senate offices to make sure they know that while it may appear that time is too short – other shortcuts should not be used to deny a robust debate on these critical issues.

Thanks!
