CABLE ORDINANCE

City made wrong choice on new law

As the state House of Representatives member from District 135, I've had the opportunity to discuss key issues with hundreds of constituents during my two years in office. One issue that I learned was very important to these voters is the ongoing cable rate increases and their desire for elected officials to do something about it.

Because of those discussions, I feel confident that the majority of Springfield citizens — certainly those located in House District 135 — oppose the recently approved Master Multichannel Video Services Franchise Ordinance. I absolutely oppose it.

As a former member of the Springfield City Council, I know full well the ordinance is a barrier to entry for new competitors. That's why, during the 2007 session, I will support statewide legislation that will encourage video services completion throughout Missouri, including Springfield.

Voters in House District 135 expect me to fight for a state bill. They want a bill that will create benefits like increased investment in advanced communications technologies and lower prices.

The Master Multichannel Video Franchise should have been defeated. State legislation that reflects consumer benefits is the best way to create cable completion in Springfield.

I believe such a bill can be passed in the 2007 session.

I foresee it as a bill with language that will not entirely please AT&T, the cable companies and probably not the cities like Springfield, but a compromise that, in the end, will bring huge benefits to consumers.
