Comcast shooting itself in the foot with traffic shaping "explanations"

By Eric Bangeman | Published: October 23, 2007 - 11:38PM CT

As the evidence that Comcast is doing something untoward with BitTorrent and other traffic on its network has mounted, the cable company has tried clumsily to fend off accusations of wrongdoing. The latest developments come in the wake of several conference calls held by the ISP in which it attempted to make a case for its practice of sending forged TCP reset packets to interfere with some P2P traffic.

The blogosphere is abuzz over an Associated Press investigative article this past Friday on the subject of Comcast's BitTorrent filtering. Briefly, there were a number of articles in early September which alleged that Comcast was using some fairly sneaky techniques to throttle BitTorrent traffic on its network. Comcast, of course, denied any such behavior. It took a month and a half, but both a mainstream media news organization as well as the Electronic Frontier Foundation have tested and confirmed the previously reported claims. It turns out that Comcast is not only throttling BitTorrent, but Gnutella and, strangely, Lotus Notes are also suffering.

By John Pletz
Oct. 13, 2007

AT&T Inc. is laying the groundwork for an assault on Comcast Corp.'s local cable TV monopoly starting this spring, perhaps as soon as April.

Having cleared the legislative hurdles that stood in the way of offering TV here, AT&T is now sprucing up its network of roughly 65 local stores; hiring construction, engineering and call-center staffers, and building out the fiber-optic network needed to deliver its U-verse TV service.
