saveaccess's blogCNET - Week in reviewPosted on July 1, 2006 - 5:24pm.
from: CNET News Week in review: Tech face-lift By Steven Musil A massive communications bill is taking shape in the Senate, and it promises to change the shape of the tech world. A U.S. Senate panel narrowly rejected strict Net neutrality rules, dealing a grave setback to companies like eBay, Google and Amazon.com that had made enacting them a top political priority this year. By an 11-11 vote, the Senate Commerce Committee failed to approve a Democrat-backed amendment that would have ensured all Internet traffic is treated the same no matter what its "source" or "destination" might be. Verizon: The Sound of One Hand ClappingPosted on July 1, 2006 - 5:03pm.
Verizon must have the same confused legal and PR strategists as AT&T. On the same day, Verizon releases one press release that applauds the California Senate Committee for the passage of a terrible state franchise - and then another announcing they are suing Montgomery County, Md., over negotiations for a video franchise there. The odd thing about the lawsuit, a representative for Montgomery County claims Verizon hasn't even filed an application yet. ( categories: State Franchises | Verizon )
Just say "No" to AT$TPosted on July 1, 2006 - 4:48pm.
An older 6/23 article but interesting in light of USA Today's retraction about Telcos giving the NSA individual phone records(only AT&T is still implicated in the NSA scandal - AT&T is also suspected of housing secret NSA facilities to monitor network traffic). In addition to the quote in the article below (where AT&T asserts it owns your private information), we also found this in their privacy policy: ( categories: AT&T | NSA/Telco Wiretap Scandal )

from: TMC Net [June 30, 2006] Net Neutrality: It's Pretty Simple, Really. By David Sims The news as of the first coffee this morning, and the music is Creedence Clearwater Revival's Chronicle, probably the best greatest hits package ever assembled: It's time to delve into net neutrality, see what yesterday's Senate committee vote meant, what portents of doom are portending and if Google of Yahoo! is going to win the bidding war for premium service the telecoms are slavering for. When A Net Neutrality Tie Is A WinPosted on June 30, 2006 - 6:52am.
from: TMP Cafe When A Net Neutrality Tie Is A Win By Art Brodsky The news stories following the Senate Commerce Committee vote on Net Neutrality pictured it as a defeat for the forces of good. Don't believe it. Even though the Net Neutrality amendment failed on a tie vote, we got ourselves into a good position for the rest of the game. ( categories: Senate S.2686 )
The Seventh Inning Telco StretchPosted on June 29, 2006 - 10:47pm.
A rant from the blogspehere by Matt Stoller with a net neutrality-centric position (this telco-communications bill goes way beyond the internet in its scope and list of controversial issues). Nonetheless, the insights into the proceedings are revealing. See the source for the extensive commenting. from: Matt Stoller ( categories: Senate S.2686 )
